Shaun--Thanks for commenting. I agree that not everyone on the Web is passionate about quality, though the "expert" institutions out there are hardly free from that shortcoming either. I think a "defined mission and a passion for quality," as you put it, underlies all excellence, whether within traditional institution or on the newer social media frontier. I look forward to checking out CollectiveX. --Jeff

Jeff - Thank you for posting the Jimmy Wales piece. I had not heard him speak before this and I love the point he makes that the "community is passionate about quality".

I think the challenge, in light of Andew Keen's comments, is that not everyone on the internet is passionate about quality. Sometimes, the mega-social networks remind me of the grade-school kids who collect Pokemon cards ("Gotta catch 'em all!") yet have know idea how to actually play the game or iPod's that have "Piano Man" on them with Elton John listed as the artist because they downloaded it from a file-sharing site that doesn't know it's a Billy Joel tune.

I am in this business and our Group Engagement Network powers over 9,000 Groupsites. I will say that our most engaged, productive groups on CollectiveX (either public or private) are those that have a defined mission and a passion for quality. Without that, many social networks become Keen's "cacophonous chaos of the blogosphere".
